A fuel cell is a device that converts the chemical energy from a fuel into electricity through a chemical reaction with oxygen or another oxidizing agent with high efficiency. Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells also called proton exchange membrane fuel cells-deliver high-power density and offer the advantages of low weight and volume, compared with other fuel cells. The electrodes containing platinum particles with electro-catalytic properties are responsible for electron transfer as the heart of fuel cell system. Since the platinum electrocatalytic layer plays a vital role in the performance of PEM fuel cells, therefore in the present project the preparation of electro-catalyst platinum layer has been studied. For the first step, a literature review using data bank in the library and internet has been carried out, and the history of low platinum content electrodeposition methods has been reviewed. At the second step, a layer of platinum nano-particles was deposited on the carbon Vulcan modified carbon paper using cyclic voltammetric method at the different cycles. The surface morphology and uniformity of the platinum electro-catalyst layer were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electron microscopic imaging indicates that the uniformity of platinum nano-particles distribution varies due to the method of deposition. Chemical composition of the electro-catalyst surface and the loading amounts of platinum were investigated by energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) techniques, respectively. For calculation of electrochemical surface area (ECSA), the synthesized electro-catalyst gas diffusion layer was applied as the working electrode in the oxygen reduction reaction using three-electrode electrochemical cell. The results of electrochemical tests indicate that the fabricated electro-catalyst layer exhibits a superior electro-catalytic effect and the results were compared to the other results in the literature and showed good agreement with them.‎
